Spano, a Democrat, who announced his candidacy last month to represent the 37th district in the seat left vacant by George Latimer's ascension to Westchester County Executive, dropped out of the race Thursday.
The Democrats will be announcing their nominee on Jan. 9 at the Westchester County Center, which caused Spano to withdraw.
"That leaves little time to reach out to the 600 district leaders," Spano said. "The new timing favors candidates who announced early and who have been working the district since then. But as a full-time mayor, I faced a difficult challenge, especially with two holiday weekends in between.”
Four other Democrats have announced their candidacy: Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer, West Harrison resident Mark Jaffe, teacher Kat Brezler and Bedford Supervisor Chris Burdick.
On the Republican side, only Sarmad Khojasteh, a Bedford attorney, has announced his candidacy.
The 37th Senate District covers the cities of New Rochelle, Rye, White Plains, Yonkers and the towns of Bedford, Harrison, Mamaroneck, North Castle, Rye, Eastchester.
